Do you need a flat sheet as well as a fitted sheet?

The question that divides all sleepers! Bed sheets in Australia tend to be sold as sheet sets, and they’ll include both a fitted sheet and a flat sheet.

A fitted sheet will have a skirt of material and an elasticated edge – this is the sheet that you put directly on your mattress, and easily tucks under the edges of your mattress. The fitted sheet is the sheet that you lay on directly. You want to make sure the fitted sheet is the exact right size for your bed (e.g. a king size bed sheet for a king size mattress) to make sure the elastic seam can hold the sheet in place. Good fitted sheets will protect your mattress and provide a smooth sleep surface. Don’t forget about our mattress protectors and toppers too when purchasing a fitted sheet!

A flat sheet is a large rectangular piece of fabric that you lay on top of the fitted sheet. It will usually have seams along the edges and be made from the same material as the fitted sheet. Flat sheets are also known as top sheets, and can be left loose or tucked in. Hotels commonly have flat sheets, as they’re great for providing a luxury feel. Flat sheets reduce how often you need to wash your quilt covers, as they put a barrier between you and the fabric of the quilt. They’re also great for summer, as a flat sheet is often all you need on hot nights.

Whether or not you like a flat sheet is completely personal preference – that’s why Adairs offers bedding separates, which allows you to buy just a fitted sheet and pillowcase.

What Does Thread Count Mean For Sheet Sets?

A thread count is how many horizontal and vertical strands make up a piece of bedding, per square inch. The more strands there are, the softer and smoother a fabric will feel against your skin. As sheets sit directly against your skin, we would recommend bedsheets with higher thread count. High thread count bedding won’t feel rough on sensitive skin, and has the added benefit of trapping warmth during cold nights. Conversely, a sheet with a lower thread count will be breathable and airy, so we recommend swapping your sheets over in summer. Our materials like Stonewashed Cotton and Vintage Washed Linen have a medium thread count and get softer with every wash, so you don’t have to worry about the thread count meaning a rough sleep.
